Carl Phillips

Join us on Tuesday February 20 for an intimate evening with Carl Phillips, winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, as he shares his poetry and a new essay on food, community, and perseverance from the Food Issue of Switchyard magazine. Hosted in the “big room” of Leon Russell’s historic Church Studio, the evening will also feature music by Tulsa’s own Casii Stephan, and a Q&A led by Switchyard editor Ted Genoways. Come early for an opening reception at 7 p.m. and enjoy cocktails based on recipes devised by Carl Phillips himself.

Magic City Books will be selling books by Carl Phillips at the event including Then the War: And Selected Poems, 2007-2020, winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.

Carl Phillips is the author of Speak LowDouble ShadowSilverchestReconnaissanceWild Is the WildPale Colors in a Tall Field, Then the War: And Selected Poems, and several other works. He has been awarded the Kingsley Tufts Award, the Jackson Poetry Prize, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, among other honors. He teaches at Washington University in St. Louis.

Casii Stephan is a soul pop/rock artist hailing from Minnesota. Now based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the impassioned songstress evokes subtle vibrato notes and roller-coaster-like melodies, which immediately grab the listener, while her emotional lyrics share intimate stories.
