Roger Deakins

March 3, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Magic City Books and the Hulett Collection are thrilled to welcome Academy Award winning cinematographer Roger Deakins for a special in-person program on Friday March 3 at 7:00 pm in the Algonquin Room at Magic City Books to discuss his first ever monograph, Byways.

This is the first monograph by the legendary Oscar-winning cinematographer Sir Roger A. Deakins (born 1949), best known for his collaborations with directors such as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes and Denis Villeneuve. It includes previously unpublished black-and-white photographs spanning five decades, from 1971 to the present.

After graduating from college Deakins spent a year photographing life in rural North Devon, in Southwest England, on a commission for the Beaford Arts Centre; these images are gathered here for the first time and attest to a keenly ironic English sensibility, while also documenting a vanished postwar Britain. A second suite of images expresses Deakins’ love of the seaside. Traveling for his cinematic work has allowed Deakins to photograph landscapes all over the world; in this third group of images, that same irony remains evident.

A book signing will happen at the conclusion of the program. Copies of Byways are available now at Magic City Books and can be ordered online, https://magiccitybooks.square.site/product/byways/1004. All online orders will ship after the event via USPS and be signed by Mr. Deakins.

The Hulett Collection is proud to present the second North American exhibition of acclaimed photographer and Academy Award winning filmmaker, Roger A. Deakins. Works on display will include photographs featured in Deakins’ monograph, Byways, as well as new, never-before-seen photographs. The exhibition will open to the public on March 4, 2023 with an opening reception with Roger and James Deakins (TEAM DEAKINS) from 5:00PM – 8:00PM at The Hulett Collection. The exhibition will be on display through April 29, 2023.

Sir Roger Deakins is one of today’s most honored cinematographers, renowned for his diverse and expansive body of work. He has been nominated for 15 Oscars, winning twice for Best Cinematography with the films “BladeRunner 2049” and “1917.” Deakins has also received five BAFTA with 10 nominations. In 2022, Deakins was knighted by Prince Charles in recognition of his contributions to film. He remains the only cinematographer bestowed this honor.

In 2020, Roger Deakins and his wife and collaborator, James Ellis Deakins, started a podcast called Team Deakins dedicated to the world of film. Byways (2021) is Roger Deakins’ first monograph and in 2022, his photographs have been exhibited in institutional art spaces and galleries in the United States and Europe to international acclaim.
